Starting July 28, only Northwestern Medicine-approved web browser extensions for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome will work on NM devices. Any extension that is not approved will be automatically disabled and will no longer function.
Why this matters
Browser extensions can help with daily work, but they may also have access to what you view and type online, including patient information and NM systems. Limiting extensions to approved tools helps protect patient information, supports HIPAA compliance and reduces security risk. Like other software used at NM, browser extensions are subject to review and approval before use.
What you need to know
Most work-related tools will continue to work, and no action is needed.
All unapproved extensions in Edge and Chrome will stop working after July 28. If you need a browser extension for your job that is not currently approved, submit a request for review through the process below.
How to request approval for an extension
Submit a New Software at NM request in MyNM Service Center by using the form or searching for “New Software at NM” in the MyNM Service Center catalog.
Choose “Web Browser Plug-In/Add-On” under Software Type.
Include the extension name and a clear business justification.
The Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) team will review the request and share the outcome. Approved extensions are added to the approved list so they continue to work for you and others who need them.
