The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) in October announced the election of Pediatric Pain Medicine Specialist Santhanam Suresh, MD, MBA, as the board’s new president. Dr. Suresh is the Arthur C. King Professor and chair of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and professor of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He previously served as vice chair and director of Research for the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Lurie Children’s Hospital and as chair of its Pain Practices Committee.
Dr. Suresh also serves as co-chair of the Steering Committee for SmartTots, a public-private partnership of the Food and Drug Administration and the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) with the goal of making surgery safer for infants and children. He is on the board of trustees for IARS, is vice chair of the Executive Annual Meeting Oversight Committee for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and is a member of the Anesthesiology Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Suresh has ABA certification in anesthesiology, pain medicine and pediatric anesthesiology, and he also participates in the ABA MOCA 2.0® initiative, which provides an innovative online approach to continuous learning.
Dr. Suresh earned his medical degree from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, India. He completed residencies at Cook County Health and Hospitals Systems and Loyola Medical Center, and a fellowship at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. In addition to Lurie Children’s Hospital, he also serves on the medical staff of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Central DuPage Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Proton Center.
